10,000 Tons of Iron Can Be So Light
The world's first mass model of the Eiffel Tower offers a unique way to experience this iconic structure. Not only the size, but also the mass of the original is proportionally scaled. This makes it clear: the Eiffel Tower is an absolute marvel of lightweight construction. The weight of what was then the tallest building in human history is approximately 10,000 tons. Reduced to a mass model about 12 cm in size, that's only about 1 gram – the weight of a paperclip. Creating such a lightweight yet stable model using 3D printing was a real challenge.
This mass model of the Eiffel Tower makes the world-famous structure tangible in a special way. This high-quality mass model combines architecture, engineering, and physics, allowing you to directly experience abstract concepts like scale and weight.
Unlike conventional miniatures, this is not a lightweight decorative object. The model has precisely the mass the Eiffel Tower would have if it were scaled down proportionally to that size. This makes a fundamental physical principle directly tangible.
Learning Potential and Applications
The Eiffel Tower mass model is particularly suitable for:
- use in the classroom to illustrate physical concepts
- studies and continuing education in the natural sciences or engineering
- at home as an exceptional learning and display object
- The model stimulates thought, invites discussion, and helps to intuitively understand complex relationships.
The model becomes especially engaging thanks to its AR (Augmented Reality) component: Digital content can be overlaid on the physical model using a smartphone or tablet. This makes additional information, diagrams, and animations visible. The model thus becomes an interactive learning tool that combines classical physics with modern technology.
The learning set included in the app continues the idea of using the mass model to make enormous dimensions tangible: For example, it shows you how large the Great Pyramid of Giza or Germany's tallest building would be at scale. It's suitable for all ages: All the questions and answers are designed so that everyone can discover something new in a playful way.
